A infecção crônica por HBV continua sendo uma preocupação significativa de saúde pública, particularmente na África, onde o ônus é substancial. O HBV é classificado em dez genótipos distintos filogeneticamente (A–J), e os testes diagnósticos existentes frequentemente falham em fornecer informações genéticas abrangentes.
